European Indoor Championships Turun, Poland 7th March

Cardiff’s Owen Smith competed in Great Britain 400x4 relay team that finished 3rd in the final yesterday evening. It was a fine performance, by all British runners in the relay team, holding on to secure 3rd place, and winning Bronze medals.

Owen can now concentrate on his summer season, with 400m Olympic standard in mind.

 

Running Indoors on a 6 lane track caused a lot of problems, in relays but and some middle distance races, causing excitement, disqualifications, and reinstated. Showed that tactics and strength, are required for a successful outcome.

 

Welsh Elite only Winter 10k Newport 6th March

 

Conditions at Newport were almost perfect for endurance racing, with no wind and cool temperatures. The Male and Female races included some invited English runners to take part in both races. Commonwealth Games standards (CG) were the target in both races.

 

Mens race CG Standard 28.30

Cardiff’s Ieuan Thomas acted as pace maker for the early laps, the field was on target at 5k reached in 14.10, that included Cardiff’s James Hunt, in second half of race Emile Cairess (Leeds AC) pushed on when the pace slowed, he won in 28.14.30 pb.

 

Kristian Jones (Swansea) 2nd 28.33.17, Dewi Griffiths (Swansea) 3rd 28.45.72, James Hunt (Cardiff) 4th 28.59.63 pb, Michael Ward 5th (Cardiff) 29.43.92.

 

Some used race for Olympic Marathon Trial in Kew Gardens in London at end of March.

For others in was a good test of their current fitness level.

 

Females race CG Standard 32.30

Cardiff’s Charlotte Arter led at start, to help club training partners Jennifer Nesbitt and Clara Evans reach the Commonwealth Games 10k standard.

Lili Partridge (Birchfield) was the English invited runner in race.

 

At 5km Arter, Nesbitt, Evans, and Partridge were on target. Nesbitt took turn in leading, then Partridge took lead when pace slowed, and went on to win in 32.33.16.

Jennifer Nesbitt 2nd 32.44.26 pb, Clara Evans 3rd 32.49.01 pb, Sarah Astin U23 4TH (Conac) 34.25.35 was after European U23 Championship standard in Bergan, Norway later this summer.

10k races will be held later in summer for more opportunities to achieve CG standards.

 

Race Walking, and Throwing events were also held, with no Cardiff competitors.
