European Championships.
A wonderful window on the fantastic sport of athletics.
Many athletes whose dreams were to take part in this Championship came true.
Not only did these athletes compete but they did us proud showing the world how good they are.
Jeremiah Azu came home with a Gold and Bronze medal. He ran the race of his life in the 100m in the outside lane with a new personal best of 10.13s. His delight was clear to everyone when he realised he was third. This was his first senior international medal and his celebrations showed what it meant to him.
His gold medal was from the 4x100m. Jeremiah ran the first leg and handed the baton with the Great British team ahead. A firm foundation for the rest of the team to race off. Great Britain came home clear winners.
Jake Heyward was another medalists running in the 1500m. The race was delayed by thunderstorms. Jake must have thought it was liquid sunshine, a regular occurrence in Wales. When Jakob Ingetbrigtsen took the lead the runners began to string out. Jake stayed with Jakob tracking him. He stayed patient which resulted in an incredible second place. As Jake realised what he had done a wonderful smile came across his face.
Bethan Davies walked the race of her life on the roads in the 35km Race walk. Bethan finished 11th in 2.59.39s. The highest position in an international Race walk. This was only the third time Bethan has completed this distance. The concentration on competing and walking at the same time is so difficult . This was a fantastic result.
Congratulations to all and thank you for your great performances.
