Jeremiah Azu broke his own Welsh 100m record in Germany yesterday, May 25th, with 9.97 secs.
In so doing he has become the first Welshman to break the 10 second barrier for 100m with a legal time although he has previously ducked under the barrier with a wind assisted run.
It’s also the fastest time by a British athlete this year and bodes well for his chances of getting selection for the Paris Olympics. Whilst he is currently coached by Marco Airale in Italy, his previous coach and former club chair and Welsh 100 champion Helen James must take much of the credit for Jeremiah’s performance.
His time bettered his own Welsh record of 10.04 set last year. That time eradicated from the record books another Cardiff member’s Welsh record, that of Christian Malcolm whose record of 10.11 had stood for almost 23 years.
